Program Note

The country of Wales, on the west coast of the isle of Great Britain, is a land of rich natural beauty, with snowy mountains, deep green valleys, rugged coastlines full of Cambrian fossils and an ancient culture that preceded the Roman occupation 2,000 years ago.

Approximately 8,000 square miles in area, Wales is a little smaller than the State of New Jersey. About twenty percent of its three million inhabitants speak the Welsh language, Cymraeg, a Celtic language. Wales is called the “Land of Song,” and the harp, along with the red dragon and the daffodil, is one of its symbols.

“Calon Lân” is surely one of the best loved of Welsh songs. It was written as a hymn in the 1890s by Daniel James and John Hughes under the bardic name of “Gwyrosydd,” but has since attained the status of a folk song. It is frequently sung at matches of the Welsh rugby union by both fans and players, making the stadium resound!

The Text of “Calon Lân”

Nid wy’n gofyn bywyd moethus,
Aur y byd na’i berlau mân:
Gofyn wyf am galon hapus,
Calon onest, calon lân.
Calon lân yn llawn daioni,
Tecach yw na’r lili dlos:
Dim ond calon lân all ganu
Canu’r dydd a chanu’r nos.
I don’t ask for a luxurious life,
the world’s gold or its fine pearls,
I ask for a happy heart,
an honest heart, a pure heart.
Chorus: A pure heart full of goodness
Is fairer than the pretty lily,
None but a pure heart can sing,
Sing in the day and sing in the night.
