Clarinetist Lydia Sadoff and DET, 2018

The cavatina and cabaletta format originated in the bel canto era as a showpiece for virtuosi. A short and lyrical arietta was followed by a quick section with fioratura, designed to show off the performer. I met Lydia Sadoff when she was a member of the Greater Twin Cities Youth Symphony, and her playing always impressed me with its style and fluency. I was delighted when her parents Dan Sadoff and Cynthia Gillette commissioned a clarinet solo for her senior recital at the University of Minnesota.

David Evan Thomas has been honored with two McKnight Foundation Artist Fellowships, an Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and commissions from the Minnesota Orchestra and Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra. His music is published by ALRY, ECS, MorningStar, Augsburg Fortress and several other publishers. Thomas was the first composer-in-residence for The Schubert Club from 1997-2005 and in 2016 he received the “An die Musik Award” from that organization for outstanding service. In 2018 Thomas was initiated into Sigma Alpha Iota Fraternity as a National Arts Associate. Thomas lives in Minneapolis. More: www.davidevanthomas.com.
