Program Notes

  1. Andante amabile
mountain lake where guitar and string trio was written

Moose Lake, in Montana’s Pintler Mts.

  2. Vigoroso e ritmico
  3. Largo sereno

Commissioned by Jane Van Dyk in memory of her parents, Elizabeth and John Hauck, The Leaves bee Greene was sketched in the lovely “honeymoon” cabin overlooking Moose Lake on the first of many visits to the Van Dyk cabins at that lake in the Pintler Mountains. Leaves was premiered outdoors at Moose Lake, on a blazing day in August 1992 by members of the Yellowstone Chamber Players: Elizabeth Adcock, guitar; Mary LaMonaca, violin; Ken Gilstrap, viola; Carol Critelli, cello.

The famous renaissance ballad “The leaves bee greene” appears in the Fitzwilliam Virginal Book. There is no musical connection between the song and my work, but the liveliness of the Elizabethan spirit is reflected in its polyphony, rhythmic style and thematic treatment. Listen for the return of the first movement theme as a duet in two voices over a repeating bass in the last movement. Leaves was premiered outdoors at Moose Lake, on a blazing day in August 1992.
