Program Note
Written for the wedding of my brother Tim to Jody Pallone in 1979, the simple, triadic materials of this little piece lead from G to E minor, to E major and back to G. Since the flute and the organ (at least in this case) are essentially similar (both are blown pipes), I was interested in the way that a compound melodic line, one that implies in its voice-leading more than one line, might give rise to harmony. In this way, the tail of the opening flute melody presents an angular, leaping idea which is taken up by the organ to accompany the ensuing middle section.
