Sitting on Freud’s Lap honors my friend Deb Ford, a therapist who has been a member of my piano club for years. Deb’s unfailing good humor and hospitality endeared her to me years ago. The title comes from Deb herself and something she once said in passing about “…sitting in Freud’s lap.” I’m not sure whether the piece honors Sigmund Freud, the father of psychoanalysis, but it does have a certain libidinous quality. If, as George Clinton says, funk is at the root of hip-hop, this is as far toward hip-hop as this composer is willing to go. An arrangement of the eponymous piano solo, this version of Sitting on Freud’s Lap intensifies the crunch and irony of the title.
