Description

Three by Three–flute viola harp CD (2015)

The Debussy Trio performs three new works for a magical ensemble on this flute viola harp CD. Claude Debussy invented the combination of flute, viola and harp in one of his last works, but its origins lie in the trio sonata: two contrasting melody instruments with a chording, rhythmic companion. The Trio’s charismatic programming includes musical styles from French Impressionism through American jazz-fusion, and from famed American film composers. The disc opens with American composer David Evan Thomas’s In the blue glen, a meditative, often impressionistic work exploring the Grand Canyon’s Monument Creek, an which has carved a narrow flume of bluish stone polished smooth as bone. Music by Don Davis and Bruce Broughton completes the album.

David Evan Thomas has been honored with two McKnight Foundation Artist Fellowships, an Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and commissions from the Minnesota Orchestra and Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra. Born in Rochester, New York in 1958, Thomas studied at Northwestern University, Eastman School of Music, and with Dominick Argento at the University of Minnesota. His music is published by ECS, MorningStar, Augsburg Fortress and several other publishers. Thomas lives in Minneapolis.
