Program Note
During a residency at Saint Paul Academy in 1998, I was asked by an enterprising 8th grader to write a piece for her clarinet trio. I played a lot of trumpet trios as a student and enjoy the texture of three equal instruments. Here we explore leaps, undulations and close canon in the clarinet’s watery medium. 3 from the Sea has also been played as a basset-horn trio.
