Program Note
Some years ago, violist Korey Konkol introduced me to the idea of the viola choir. I enjoyed the thought of a room full of altos, a liberated orchestral viola section. When I showed up at the Bennington Chamber Music Conference in 2014, I met many violists; they needed something to play together. Among the first works I wrote at Montalvo Center for the Arts in 2015 was this single-movement Psalm. It was read at Bennington later that summer. The piece would make a good piece for a teacher to play with students, for the first part ascends into the upper positions, while the lower parts do not.
