Description
Falls Flyer–oboe and guitar CD
Klemp/Kachian Duo: Merilee Klemp, oboe/English horn; Christopher Kachian, guitar
Label: Ten Thousand Lakes (The Schubert Club), SC115
Beguiling voices make elegant music in this oboe and guitar CD by the Klemp/Kachian Duo. Oboist Merilee Klemp and guitarist Christopher Kachian are two of the busiest and most versatile musicians in the Twin Cities, and all the works on this CD were written specifically for them. While the Klemp/Kachian Duo’s repertoire is wide, here they perform music exclusively by Minnesota composers. David Evan Thomas’s Sonata for Oboe and Guitar, commissioned by The Schubert Club, opens the CD.
Thomas has written other pieces for oboe, including a Quartet for Oboe and Strings: Peregrine Tones, an oboe trio, Hydra, and a Concerto, but this Sonata is perhaps the most intimate. There’s also music by Cary John Franklin, Kim Sherman, Randall Davidson and Dan Kallman.
David Evan Thomas has been honored with two McKnight Foundation Artist Fellowships, an Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and commissions from the Minnesota Orchestra and Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra. Born in Rochester, New York in 1958, Thomas studied at Northwestern University, Eastman School of Music, and with Dominick Argento at the University of Minnesota. His music is published by ECS, MorningStar, Augsburg Fortress and several other publishers. Thomas lives in Minneapolis.
“This album is fantastic and is worth buying just for David Evan Thomas’ Sonata for oboe & guitar, a piece so cool that I sincerely hope it becomes one of the standard repertoire works for oboe and guitar.” –Jeremiah Lawson. Read Lawson’s review of Falls Flyer on Amazon.com here.
