Program Note

Northern Light for brass quintet was commissioned by Meredith Brown Alden and the American Composers Forum in honor of Mary C. Van Evera for the grand opening of the Mary Van Evera Visual Arts Center at Northland College in Ashland, Wisconsin, July, 2007. After a splash, a brief suggestion of the gentle waves of Lake Superior gives way to a broadly swinging theme. Playful treatment of the fanfare idea leads to antiphonal trumpets and general celebration. Bass trombone may be substituted for tuba. The Capital City Brass gave the premiere of the work in 2008 and has played it regularly since.
