Program Note

Psalm and Dance is one of six works for solo instrument and organ commissioned by the American Guild of Organists for its National Convention in 2008, and published by Augsburg Fortress Press as A Minnesota Organ Book. My father was a flutist, so I always enjoy the chance to write for flute and organ.

The psalm tune is “The Old 104th“, known by its text as “O Praise Ye the Lord.” The modal psalm tune is first presented against rather bluesy harmony. The jaunty dance transforms the psalm tune to major, widening its range and swinging the rhythm. An refrain in falling thirds offers affirmation on the way to a joyous conclusion.
